Opportunity for Young People – Theatre Workshops

Cherwell Theatre Company is delivering free outreach workshops with young people for their community project ‘Song of the Summer’ (previously titled ‘Time for Heroes’).

The workshops are 90 minutes long and will be delivered by Tristan (the play’s writer/director) Georgina (the movement director) and Adrian (the musical director).

They can come into your setting when convenient to you and work with a group of up to 30 young people. The workshops contain drama activities, improvisation and text work, some singing and creation of ‘stomp’ style rhythmic pieces to text from the play. They are designed to be inclusive and engaging for young people aged 15+ to hook them into the project, which they can then join, if they want to, as a musician or actor (or both)

They also have opportunities for those interested in technical theatre (lighting, sound, stage management) to work with our team as they create the show between April-August 2022. Of course, if they just want to join this initial workshop that’s fine, they can be involved as much or as little as they like in the rest of the show.

Below is the participant call out they have made for young people to get involved. It explains the nature of the initial workshops and the project going forwards.

Do have a read and let Emelia know if you’d still like to book an initial workshop. Tristan and the team have good availability (including weekday, evenings and weekend slots) to deliver these workshops in your setting at a time to suit your group. Hopefully the workshop will be a unique and fun experience for them!

Do you enjoy music? Do you love acting and want the opportunity to perform?

If the answer to the above is ‘YES!’ then you should come and get involved with:

‘Song of the Summer’, a brand-new ‘gig theatre’ piece by Tristan Jackson-Pate, co-produced by Cherwell Theatre Company and Royal & Derngate Theatres, Northampton. What is Gig Theatre?

Exactly as it sounds! It’s a performance which feels partly like a gig and partly like a play, integrating live music with scenes and physical theatre. The show is to be performed at The Picturedrome music venue with a standing audience and immersive staging.

What’s the show about?

This coming of age comedy drama explores the highs and lows of teenage life, seen through the eyes of young musicians. Set in Northampton in 2006 and featuring original indie rock music inspired by the era, the play dramatises the tension between friendship and artistic integrity and the joys of creating music with the world at your feet.Does it cost anything to be involved?

We are delighted to welcome young actors and musicians aged 15-25 to audition for this FREE PROJECT. Come along for an initial drama and music workshop on ______ to work with the professional team and get a feel for the piece.

When do rehearsals take place?

Weekly rehearsal sessions will take place between April-August 2022. They will be held on Tuesday nights from 7-9pm at Royal & Derngate and participants will work with professional directors, movement specialists and musical directors to develop skills in live music, acting and physical theatre and help shape the development of the piece.

In July a professional cast of 5 actor-musicians will join the programme alongside a stage management and technical theatre team, to bring the play to life. Rehearsals will continue at Royal & Derngate for participants throughout July with performances taking place from 11-28 August at The Picturedrome.

But I haven’t done any acting before?

Participants do not need any previous experience just an interest in acting, musicianship or technical theatre and do not have to be available for all of the weekly rehearsals, or all of the performance dates in August.
